Landing Gear Completion

Removed landing gear and had them stripped... again.  The powder-coating did not stick real well.  We had a temperature limit on the oven due to the spring gear and I believe that is why it flaked off so easy.  This time I had them gold anodized.  Not as special looking, but, it'll get me in the air.

Removed Landing Gear and Tail Wheel

I started the tail dragger to fixed tricycle gear swap today by removing the Grove main landing gear and the tail wheel assembly.  The gear was purchased from me for a Glasair FT in California.  He is converting his airplane to a TD.  My FT parts are supposed to arrive in the next week or so. (here goes the third set...)

FT Parts Arrived

I received the nose gear and both main landing gear struts today.  I am still waiting for the b-rib brackets to arrive. I spent about an hour fitting up the nose gear leg and getting an idea of what will need to be modified to make it fit the Subaru engine mount.

Back to work assembling the plane

I made new splice plates for the axle mounting points today. I decided to strip the old gear legs of all the milled fiber and sand the original shape back at the splice plate location to allow for resetting the camber and toe of the axles. Next I mixed a large batch of milled-fiber and resin, filled the old holes and mounted the splice plates. I used feeler gauges to shim the splice plates in place setting the camber to 9deg and the toe to 1deg toe in. Once clamped I left them overnight to cure. The next morning I re-drilled the new axle holes using the axle as a guide. After mounting the axles I trimmed the splice plates and legs to fit the calipers.

I did all of my adjustments and height setting during all of these procedures by setting the gear legs down on steel plates with casters mounted to them that allowed them to relax into the proper position.

New Brake Lines

Fabricated new brake lines for the FT gear today. The large (3/16" ID) Nylaflow tubing was installed per the manual by the previous owner of the gear. I used this to install a section of 3/16" aluminum tubing from the top bolts of the lower splice plate to the B-rib bracket under the main gear. I made up a small aluminum angle bracket at the lower splice plate for a -3 bulkhead fitting and a flat plate at the forward bolt holes of the B-rib bracket for a similar fitting. I used a short section of stainless braided Teflon hose for both the caliper to splice plate bulkhead fitting and upper B-rib fitting to the front brake line bulkhead in the fuselage.
